Travel day.  Registration at Wyndham Hotel from 3-6pm.  Welcome to Tulsa – Model A Territory!   Come explore some of the interesting Tulsa attractions on your own.

Monday, June 9, 2014

Registration at Wyndham Hotel from 8-5pm.  Free full breakfast for hotel guests each day of hotel stay.  Three different self-guided tours are available from 9-11am:

Cooper’s Private Auto Collection

This climate controlled showroom, 10 miles from the hotel on the outskirts of town, houses a collection of 20+ classic and vintage cars professionally restored to pristine condition.  Also on display, in addition to the many trophies won throughout the country, is a wonderful collection of automotive and oil company related antiques and memorabilia.  In addition, there is a functional old diner with all of the ’50-60‘s era booths, juke boxes and pictures.

Oklahoma Aquarium, Jenks Antiques & Oral Roberts University

The Oklahoma Aquarium is located in Jenks, fourteen miles from the hotel.  From salt water to fresh water, the Oklahoma Aquarium is the largest indoor ocean in the four state region with thousands of aquatic creatures featured in more than 100 exhibits.  The largest bull sharks in captivity with lemon, nurse and sand tiger sharks swim alongside you and even overhead as you walk through a unique underwater tunnel. Senior tickets are $10 at the door.  Jenks is also the “Antique Capitol of Oklahoma” with excellent shopping and dining options across the Arkansas River from Oral Roberts University with the “World’s Largest Praying Hands” bronze sculpture.

Mid-town with its old stately mansions

Meander around in your Model A through the beautiful, old neighborhoods that sprang up during the oil boom years.  Most of the old mansions have been restored and remain current residences.  The Skelley Mansion is now owned by Tulsa University where its President resides.  The Phillips Mansion is now the Philbrook Art Museum.  Most of these estates have extensive landscapes that are well maintained.  Many newer homes have been added in the mid-town area and nicely complement the older mansions in their grandeur!  Also don’t miss Tulsa’s Frank Lloyd Wright designed home.

Lunch on your own.

Tulsa Air and Space Museum

Exclusive program and tour.  Leave hotel at 1:00pm.

This is a private program and tour and requires a ticket.  Kim Jones, Museum Curator, will enlighten everyone about the rich aviation history of Tulsa, with much of it occurring during the Model A era.  From visits by Charles Lindberg and Amelia Earhart to the world records of Wiley Post and from the propeller days to the jet age and on into rockets and space, Tulsa played an instrumental role.  In 1930, the Tulsa airport was the busiest airport in the world due to the oil wealth.  Tulsa was once the Aviation Capital of America.  Following the presentation, we will enjoy time to wander through the museum at our own pace.  Want to climb into an F-14 Tomcat and feel like Tom Cruise?  Come be a Top Gun!  The museum is closed to the general public during our visit on Monday, so we have it all to ourselves.

Dinner on your own.

Welcome Party Program and Dessert in Hotel 7:30pm

Come mingle and meet other Model A’ers and let us officially welcome you to Tulsa.

We will outline the upcoming activities and plans, hear some interesting stories about Tulsa’s oil barons and Tulsa’s role in the development of Route 66, and then enjoy a tasty dessert.  Come enjoy some prizes and surprises!

Tuesday, June 10, 2014

Following breakfast, we begin our day with a tour of a mid-town car collection, followed by a visit of the “East Meets West” statue downtown.  Then drive along Route 66 to Claremore where we will enjoy lunch and a program on Will Rogers followed by a museum tour before returning to our hotel with an optional stop at the Catoosa Port.

Group Tour of Private Car Collection 8:30-10am

This is an amazing private collection which includes a very rare 1903 Model A Ford.  This private collection of totally restored vehicles is in a beautiful facility hidden amid a luxurious neighborhood.  You will not want to miss this stop on our day’s driving agenda.

East Meets West Statue 9:30-10:30am

This larger-than-life bronze statue illustrates the gasoline-powered automobile causing an uproar with a horse-drawn buggy on the exact spot where Route 66 crosses the Arkansas River.  Tulsa serves as the mid-point of Route 66 between Chicago and Santa Monica.  Cyrus Avery, a Tulsa civic leader, was known as the Father of the Mother Road.

Route 66 to Claremore

We will follow the old Route 66 east out of Tulsa for about 20 miles, passing the Big Blue Whale on our way to Claremore, home of the Will Rogers Memorial Center.

Will Rogers Memorial Center Lunch/Program followed by Museum Tour 12-3pm

We need to arrive at the Will Rogers Memorial Center by noon where we will then be treated to lunch in the auditorium while the most knowledgeable expert on Will Rogers, Steve Gragert, will entertain us about some very interesting tales of Will Rogers.  Will, himself, plans to be there in person, just for us, to demonstrate some of his famous rope tricks.  You will not want to miss this.  Following the lunch program, we will have ample time to browse the wonderful museum which highlights Will’s life in roping, newspapers, radio, broadway, silent movies, hollywood and always with humor and wit.  There are many words to describe Will Rogers.  He was of Indian heritage and proud of it.  He poked fun at everyone but was a friend to all.  He never met a man he didn’t like.  The Tulsa Model A Ford Club participates in many events with the Will Rogers Memorial Center since Will and Henry Ford were close friends.  We like to say, “Will never met an A he didn’t like!”  or, “Where there’s a Will, there’s an A!”

On your return to the Wyndham Hotel, some may opt to stop at the Catoosa Port to witness how ocean-going shipments reach middle America by water.  A very interesting waterway canal has been formed connecting us to the Mississippi River allowing barge traffic from the Gulf of Mexico to reach Oklahoma with various assortments of cargo.

Dinner on your own.

Hubley Races in Wyndham Hotel 7:00pm until completion

Impoundment of cars NLT 5:30pm!  Max weight is 1 lb. 5 oz.  Come enjoy the fun and suspense and root for your favorite racer!

Ladies’ and Men’s Luncheons and Programs noon – 1:30pm

From the fairgrounds photo-session, we will wend our way into mid-town to the Tulsa Garden Center and Tulsa Historical Society.  These two organizations are located in two old mansions that sit next door to one another.  The Travis brothers were oilmen who found success in the oil boom and built homes next to each other.  The ladies will be served a plated luncheon and treated to a program in the Tulsa Historical Society.  Michelle Place, Executive Director of the Tulsa Historical Society, will present:  Culture Comes to Tulsa.  The ladies will enjoy hearing how the early women who came to Tulsa with their wildcatter husbands brought class to a dirty, messy and wild new town.  The menCarsPhoto_320x240 will have a buffet meal in the Tulsa Garden Center while being entertained by a Tulsa-famous historian, best-selling author and sought-after speaker, Michael Wallis.  Mr. Wallis has published 17 books, including Route 66: The Mother Road.  His distinctive voice was heard in the movie, CARS, as the wise sheriff.   Come listen to his many stories of Route 66 and the making of the movie.  A nice prize will be awarded to the best handlebar mustache so, guys, get them growing!!  Following the two luncheons and programs, all are free to browse through both facilities.  There will be a special display of “Tulsa in the 1930’s” which should be of keen interest to our Model A group.  We will return to the hotel at our convenience.

Technical Seminars 4:00 – 5:30pm in hotel

We currently have plans for two back-to-back 45-minute sessions which will then be repeated so that those who want can attend both, if interested.  Rebuilding Model A engines using inserts is one seminar with the second one on electronic ignitions.

Self-guided tour to Bartlesville for the day visiting various sights 8am-4pm.

Bartlesville is about 50 miles from Tulsa and has numerous things to see.  Frank Phillips, of Phillips 66 Petroleum fame, made this his home.  His home is very interesting to tour and the Phillips Museum downtown is also quite interesting.  Bartlesville is a very small and scenic town.  Check out the very first oil well or wander through the Bartlesville History Museum.  Tour the Price Tower, the only skyscraper designed and built by Frank Lloyd Wright.  Drive over to Dewey and learn about cowboy Tom Mix or stop in Prairie Song and visit a village right out of the 1800’s.  Woolaroc Ranch was Frank Phillips’ favorite place and it has a wonderful museum in the ranch house with buffaloes roaming the grounds.  Frank loved to entertain on the ranch and always had annual wild west events with all the known cowboy and cowgirl stars  He  even invited many outlaws.  Most of these sights of interest in and around Bartlesville require a small admission fee, but are all well worth the price.  There are several quaint places to find lunch on your own as you explore the Bartlesville area.  We will have additional details on the various sights, admission fees and maps at the hotel to help you with your decision making process!

Regional Planning Meeting in Hotel from 4-5pm

Each club should plan to send a representative.
